Case Study - 02

An 80 year old patient has suffered his third heart stroke. His first two strokes resulted in hemiparesis. Earlier he was admitted in a nursing home when he attacked by his first heart stroke and is totally dependent on others. However, this stroke has resulted him in coma. He went unresponsive even to the painful stimuli. His wife (60) requested not to resuscitate him as he is being fed or hydrated artificially or either through tubes or intravenously. His wife also stated that he loses all his will power and asked me - not to keep me alive artificially when I am at serious stage.
Many nurses felt emotional and stated that, he should be given tube feedings and IV hydration as they can’t watch someone starving to death. Whereas many other thought to release him from the searing pains that he is bearing from so long.
